Visual TraceRoute in Google Earth
by Chris on Oct.12, 2006, under Uncategorized
Another web-widget I wasted an afternoon hacking together:
I’m a Google Earth addict, and wanted to do something ‘useful’ with it – here’s my attempt:
You can now run a traceroute (tracert in Windows) and upload the ‘report’ to this site, and it’ll spew a KML file at you with all the hops, with vague descriptions, and a path linking them (at least the ones with resolved locations!)
You can find this nifty little tool here.
There’s a comment address there, but feel free to leave (spam-free) comments in this post, too.
For the technically inclined, I’m resolving the IP addresses using MaxMind‘s free GeoLiteCity database.

Spam-free. You really shouldn’t have mentioned that Chris.
Because you’ve got a great blog here.
I’ve got this great TraceRoute site.
Check it out here – http://thewafflegroup.blogspot.com

Just kidding – I’d check out your script, but it’s not really worth it the way Google earth loads over 56k.

I tried it out for the Telkom site (couldn’t think of anything else in SA – scarred for life by them I am) and here’s the result:
