9 Interesting Scientific Tips

Use easy to understand language to explain various scientific phenomena and theories.

1. A spoonful of neutron star material weighs 6 billion tons

It is estimated that there are about 1 billion neutron stars in the Milky way. The mass of these stars is about 1.3-2.5 times that of the sun. Neutron stars contain the densest known matter that can be directly observed. A spoonful of neutron star material weighs 6 billion tons, which is about the weight of Mount Everest. The pressure in the core of a star is so high that most charged particles, electrons and protons fuse together to form a star. Neutron stars are mainly composed of uncharged particles.

2. Chalk is made of trillions of tiny plankton fossils

Chalk is made of lime mud, but what many people don't know is that lime mud is formed by the skeleton of plankton. In fact, tiny unicellular algae called coccolithophores have lived in the earth's oceans for 200 million years. Unlike other marine plants, they are covered with calcite.

3. It takes 8 minutes and 19 seconds for light to travel from the sun to the earth

In space, the speed of light reaches 300000 kilometers per second. Even if the speed sounds amazing, it will take a lot of time to cross the 150 million kilometers between the earth and the sun. However, compared with the five and a half hours it takes for the sun's light to reach Pluto, the time it takes for the sun's light to reach the earth is actually very short.

4. Drinking too much coffee may make your chest smaller

An interesting study published in the British Journal of cancer seems to be bad news for women who love coffee. The study investigated the daily intake of coffee by more than 300 women and found that women who drank three or more cups of coffee a day had 17% smaller breasts than women who drank less than three cups of coffee. The researchers say it all comes down to one reason: too much caffeine affects hormones, which affect the size of women's breasts.

5. The average height of Indonesians is the shortest in the world

According to the data collected by the British telegraph from different sources around the world in 2017, although there are tall and short in any country and region, on average, the population of Indonesia has the shortest height in the world. The average height of adults is about 157cm. The highest average height is the Netherlands, with an average adult height of 180cm.

6. The longest place name on earth has 85 letters

People living in mamungkumpurangkuntjunya hill, Australia need a lot of patience when learning to spell the name of their hometown.  But this is not the worst, because the place with the longest name in the world is located in New Zealand. The place name has 85 letters:  Taumatawhakatangihanga-koauauotamateaturipukakapikimaung-ahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu.

7. If all blank spaces in human atoms are excluded, all humans can be stuffed into the volume of sugar

The atoms that make up us look solid, but in fact more than 99.99999% of the space is empty. An atom is composed of a small and dense nucleus surrounded by a group of electrons, which are distributed in a large area in proportion. This is because electrons are not only particles, but also act like waves. Electrons can only exist where the peaks and troughs of these waves add up correctly. Moreover, the position of each electron is not distributed at one point, but within a probability range. So they take up a lot of space.

8. A flea can accelerate faster than a space shuttle

A flea jumping around can reach a height of 8 cm in a millisecond, and its speed is even more than 20 times faster than that of the space shuttle. The reason why fleas have such power is that they have an elastic protein like rubber, which can store and release energy like a spring.

9. Having boys and girls depends more on men's genes

Coligai latley, a research scientist at the University of Newcastle, UK, conducted a study involving 927 genealogies. According to his research results, male genes play a very important role in giving birth to boys and girls. The conclusion is that if a man's parents have more sons, he is more likely to have sons. Conversely, if most of his parents are daughters, he is also more likely to have daughters. This ability seems to be hereditary and seems to be related only to men.
